Now it's Summer!

It's Garbage Day.

60 degrees and partly cloudy at 6:30 a.m.

WKTV's forecast: "Hazy, hot, and humid weather today with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s. Some places in the valley could briefly hit 90! Dry, sunny weather continues today.

A cold front arrives tomorrow, bringing us the chance for showers and thunderstorms. These don't last all day, and will be gone by the late afternoon. Highs in the low to mid 80s.

Much cooler by Thursday and Friday. Dry and partly sunny, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Warming up again into the 80s as we head into the weekend."

*******************

Temperatures over the weekend hovered around the 90-degree mark, each afternoon, and there were some very impressive "light shows" (electrical storms) at night.

All in all, it was HOT!

But remember when it was like this ..............

and the temperature was 10 degrees?
We swore that no matter how warm it became in "summer" we wouldn't complain?

Just enjoy it!

Memorial Day

I've learned, over the past few years that although I'm tall, I'm just not tall enough to take good pictures during Memorial Day Exercises, and so I don't even try.

If there are any blog readers who were successful and are willing to share digital images, just send your JPEGS along for posting. (Thank you!)

"HOP SPECIALIST (Steve Miller) HIRED IN MADISON COUNTY" from Syr.com.

Steve lives in Deansboro and is the current owner of the "old" Village Hall / Historical Society building where the Hop Vines have just been tied up.

There are also new Hop Poles lying next to the Hop Yard at the Waterville Public Library - I suspect that members of the Historical Society are responsible!

IN THE MAIL

A botanist / blog reader wonders if there is any "Giant Hogweed" growing in this area.

It is NOT something that you want, because it's very much like poison ivy only worse!

We do have plenty of a close relative - "Angelica" - growing in swampy areas, but there's a great difference in the leaf structure.

Angelica is tall, but its leaves are only slightly raggedy along the edges: Giant Hogweed leaves are sharply serrated and even look as if they will hurt!

Don't Touch!

Never Let Me Go (2005) is a science fiction novel by Japanese-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro. It was shortlisted for the 2005 Booker Prize (an award Ishiguro had previously won in 1989 for The Remains of the Day), for the 2006 Arthur C. Clarke Award and for the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award. Time magazine named it the best novel of 2005 and included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.[1] It also received an ALA Alex Award in 2006. It was made into a film directed by Mark Romanek in 2010.
