Special B-day Greetings

***************

It's 28 degrees and clear at 6:30.

The WKTV Weather Forecast: "A chilly start to today with temperatures starting off in the upper 20s! Sunshine will help temperatures return into the mid to upper 50s by the afternoon.

A storm system now situated in the mid section of the nation will impact our weather this weekend. Latest indications are that rain will begin during the afternoon on Saturday and last into early Sunday. If you have any outdoor plans, the best bet is either Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon. The wind will pick up during the day on Saturday. It will feel chilly with the wind and temperatures only in the low 50s.

An unsettled weather pattern will last into early next week."

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Before you rush to file your taxes today, remember that you actually have three more days to get your forms turned in to the tax man.

Instead of being due on April 15, which is typically the filing deadline, your taxes are due Mon., April 18 this year.

The three bonus days come thanks to Emancipation Day, a little-known Washington, D.C., holiday that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district.

Emancipation Day falls on Sat., April 16, but it is observed in D.C. on Fri., April 15. That prompted the IRS to extend the tax filing deadline to April 18 this year. Under the tax code, filing deadlines can't fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.

Someone brought this to my attention, yesterday.

A link to "Heaps of History" now on The Waterville Times website.

(It really is a huge "heap.")

Thank You, "Times"!

150 years ago today, Abraham Lincoln issued a Proclamation calling militia and convening Congress that was printed, a few days later, in The Waterville Times. (Read it here.)

146 years ago today, Lincoln died. He had been shot the day before by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, while at a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.

Which brings us to .................. the timely opening, today, of Robert Redford's new film, "The Conspirator," to which WCS graduate Brian Falk added his expertise as a member of The American Film Company's production staff.

Showings of "The Conspirator"

at the Marquée Cinema, in New Hartford,

are at 1:00, 4:00 6:50 and 9:40

today through Thursday, April 21.

If you're looking for Dick William's new book, "Along Oriskany and Big Creeks," here's a list of places to shop - in addition to the Waterville Historical Society: The Waterville Times, in Clinton at the town clerk’s office, village clerk’s office, Kirkland Town Library, Clinton Shoe Center, and the Clinton Historical Society. The book will be for sale in Utica at the Oneida County Historical Society, in Clark Mills at Meelan’s Market, in Oriskany Falls at the Falls Insurance Agency and the Limestone Ridge Historical Society, in Oriskany at the Oriskany Museum and in New Hartford at Harris Brothers Jewelers.

The books will sell for $24.00 state tax included, and all proceeds will benefit the Clinton Historical Society where Williams has served as president and newsletter editor.

Next week is school vacation, and I'm going to take a break, too - at least I'm going to sleep late and spend lots of time outdoors, "playing" in the dirt! I'll probably do some blog posts, now and then, but NOT on a regular basis, so just check back occasionally and - as always - Email me whatever you'd like to have me post.

Have a great week, everyone!

Just heard: the "rat-tat-tat-tat--tat----tat--------tat----" of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, hammering on a metal sign, out next to the road. Yet another sure sign .......

It's Spring!

Wednesday afternoon for Thursday

*********

It's been a very dark and soggy day, today, but - because of all the rain - everything is turning GREEN!

I don't know what the crop is, but it's GREEN!

Some of you won't be as excited to see this as others are:
it's just GREEN GRASS .......... but IT'S WONDERFUL!

Thursday is GARBAGE DAY!

The forecast from WKTV: "Our weather slowly improves (Thursday) thanks to slow moving high pressure. Some patchy morning fog giving way to a mix of sunshine and clouds. High temperatures are back into the low to mid 50s. Breezy at times, especially in the middle of the day. Clearing out tonight, with frost developing as temperatures fall below freezing. Full sunshine and a nice finish to the work week Friday! Some encore morning sun Saturday followed by increasing clouds and rain showers late in the day. Rain Saturday night and scattered lingering showers on Sunday. Turning unsettled with temperatures remaining seasonable early next week."

Have a great weekend, everyone!

It's Recyclables Day

43 degrees and drippy at 6:30 Wednesday morning.

The WKTV Forecast: "A wet start to the day across all of Central New York. Grab the umbrella on your way out the door, as rain showers will continue throughout the day. While it won't rain from start to finish, we'll run the risk for showers through about midnight tonight.

Today's storm that's bringing the rain will pass to the east tonight. Slow improvements in our weather will start tomorrow with decreasing clouds. Lots of sunshine arrives for Friday, with highs returning into the upper 50s.

Another storm system approaches the area this weekend bringing us rain late Saturday and early Sunday."

44.2 degrees at 5:30 Tuesday a.m.

"The bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern "insurrection." History.com

Clouds and rain showers on Wednesday, before the weather quiets down for Thursday and Friday."

Patches of Blue Scilla (Scilla Siberica) have begun to make "puddles" and "ponds" on lawns.......

I've seen several Kildeer making low-level approaches over fields. This bird's name is derived from it's best-known song, which is is a loud kill-dee, kill-dee, kill-dee, given as males perform wide circle-flights over their territories in early spring.

Slow down and listen: the "peepers" are peeping in all of the swampy areas!
