Recyclables Day

It's 31.5 degrees and overcast at 5:50 a.m.

The weather forecast from WKTV: " As a weak area of low pressure approaches from the west (on Wednesday) we expect more cloud cover and a few rain or snow showers. Most areas won't see any snow accumulation but a very thin coating can't be ruled out over the higher terrain. Drier on Thursday and Friday and warmer, with high temperatures in the lower 50s. Warmer still for the weekend, with temperatures climbing well into the 50s on Saturday and especially Sunday."

YESTERDAY

What began as rain had, by mid-morning, become thicker and whiter
and
snow coated hilltops to the East and West.

We took some consolation in the news that it had snowed as much as five or six inches in Cazenovia!

The new precipitation, however, filled creeks once again.

The Dugway, in Clinton.

On Gridley-Paige Road.

The "cascade" next to Rt. 12B north of Oriskany Falls.

There were no fishermen anywhere along the Oriskany.

However ..............

............ I caught sight of these tiny, bright green sprigs in the woods next to Fuess-Cleary Road:

WILD LEEKS!

Right next door, I found the answer to the occasional question:

"Where in the world is Glen Carroll?"

Oooops! Sorry!
(I really meant "Glen" but seem to have typed "Dan," earlier! Not enough coffee!)

He's in his new office on West Main Street behind the door with the "Acrelec" logo!

(It's pronounced AK'-relec.)

(from Debbie Conway:)

"Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Village Hall.
Vests and bags provided, we suggest folks bring gloves if they have them.
Volunteers will go out in pairs or small groups to work a section of the
Village. Usually we are out about 2-3 hours at most but in that short
period of time, we can pick up a lot of trash usually 15- 20 bags."

Announcing the publication of a

New Book on Oriskany and Big Creeks

Using David H. Beetle's "Along the Oriskany," published in 1947, as a jumping-off point, "Clinton and Kirkland historian Richard Williams has completed a book on the Oriskany and Big Creek valley which will be released in mid-April 2011. The 148-page book has 65 pictures and descriptions of the 10 hamlets and villages along the creek plus sections on the geology, the history, the trees and plants, the animals, the fishing, and the economy of the valley.

Chapter one, by Jim Cunningham, details the Madison County lakes at the summit of the Chenango Canal in Bouckville and how they still today supply water through the Oriskany to the Erie Canal.

About one-half of the pictures have been taken by Clinton photographer Marc Goldberg, and retired Hamilton College geology professor Don Potter has explained the rocks and minerals and the effect of the glaciers on the area. Also O-D sports columnist John Pitarresi has written about fishing in the creek.

The books will sell for $24.00 state tax included and all proceeds will benefit the Clinton Historical Society where Williams has served as president and Newsletter Editor. "
