A Special "Thank You"! (and photos)

from Tom and Kathy Eisenhut, Sunday evening:

"Today the Deansboro along with the Waterville Fire Dept. literally saved our home from burning to the ground. My truck was parked in front of the house and somehow caught on fire. It spread to the house. Thank God our alert neighbors spotted it. The Deansboro fire Dept. was there in no time and with help from Waterville brought it under control. Considerable damage was done but the house is still standing! Kathy and I were enroute from Pennsylvania. We cannot thank the fire depts. And our friends and neighbors enough!!! This writing is a bit jumbled (we’re still in shock) But you get the idea. We cannot give thanks enough!"

Tom asked me to "write a little something in your wordsmith way," but I think the way he wrote it is perfect!

Tom also suggested that I drive out and take a look - which I did.

Although it doesn't appear that there was very much structural damage done to the residence, I can only image that smoke permeates everything inside the building.

I can also imagine what would have happened had no one spotted the truck fire or dialed 911 !

Right now, it's 50 degrees

GARBAGE DAY

The forecast from YNN: "An area of low pressure off to our southeast will continue to swirl in clouds, and occasional showers through Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will also be a bit cooler than average.

Look for showers to wind down, and for skies to clear out Tuesday night as high pressure builds in from the west. High pressure will provide dry weather, abundant sunshine, and rising temperatures through next weekend. Our weather models hint at temperatures as warm as the mid 70s by this time next week!"

Here and There

It's been dark and rainy, for the most part, for the past several days, but that made this little pond out near Brookfield look a bit mystical ......

................ and made the bright berries on this clump of Black Alder (American Holly) near Paris Green seem even redder.

Autumn decorations brighten the front porch at the Nasypanys' on White Street.

Jody Hildreth took a trek to Trenton Falls, and shared these pictures showing everything from the Falls to bright Sumac and Maple leaves, "shaggy mane" mushroom, and even the old foundations of an early aquaduct.

Last weekend, when he went back to visit "Frostbite Falls," on Tassel Hill, he found a group of small "PUFFballs" --- the sort that shoot an aerosol-like burst of spores when poked or pressed.

(Tricky photography - no stick visible! Thanks for all of the great pictures, Jody!)

P.S. Jody is looking for Foxfire to photograph. (I haven't seen any for several years - mostly because I haven't been spending much time in the dark woods at night!) Any suggestions / locations?

There's nothing "scenic" about this view, but reclamation efforts along the bank of Big Creek next to the Wessling home on Buell Avenue have been drawing plenty of viewers. The project has been undertaken by Oneida County (with extraordinary help from Legislator Patrick Brennan, according to Mayor Younes, and permission from the DEC) and a bit of help from the Village DPW. The portion of the "creek" that is visible is relatively new - within the last ten or fifteen years - and has now been blocked off so that - hopefully - ALL of the water will flow in the original channel, at the base of the hillside (out of the camera view) without stealing any more real property!

Elsewhere:

the latest update on recent activities of the Colorful Bonnets, from Sandy Martin:

"Colorful Bonnets September gathering took place at the Copper Turret in the Cherry Valley Room. One of the specials was an Autum Salad consisting of greens, apples, pears, raisins goat cheese, sweet potato curls and maple cider vinaigrette. It was wonderful. Sixteen members were in attendance. Bev and Joan hosted the event. Door prizes consisting of Fall decorations were given out. October's luncheon will be held on October 27 at Quacks Diner and is being
arranged by Lovina and Pat." (Thanks, Sandy!)

Found: a delightful - and interesting! - article by Hobie Morris
about the local invention of the "Android"
as reported by the editor of The Waterville Times in 1859!

Please note; if that link doesn't work, go back to the home page, scroll down, and look for an article about Madison County's Famously Unknown Music Man.
