***************

It's Garbage Day 57 degrees and clearing at 6:30.
The WKTV forecast: "Sunshine returns in force across the area today. Drier air builds from the west, with high temperatures climbing into the 70s. Expect a bit of a breeze this afternoon too.

Partly cloudy skies tonight with lows in the lower 50s.

Picture perfect weather continues tomorrow, with sunshine and highs near 80. The upcomming holiday weekend looks generally nice. A slight chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm is possible on Saturday as a very weak cold front moves through. Sunday looks entirely dry. Another small chance of thunderstorms on Monday.

Dry weather looks to persist into early next week too."

IN THE MAIL

This tribute to Kent and Carole Cole from their daughter, Wendy Cole Woodward:

Young Love Blossoms and Lasts

"Carole and Kent Cole of Sanger Ave. Waterville celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss on July 1. They met and began dating while attending Waterville Centaral High School in the late 1950's. After Kent's parents (Helen and Phil Cole) moved south, he stayed here living with his friend Dave Darrow and family until Carole (Roberts) graduagted high school. They married in 1961. Kent worked at Hubble Sign Company in NYMills until his retirement in 2007. Carole worked at Utical Mutual (National) Insurance until the birth of their first child (Wendy) in 1962, She then remained a home-maker until 1974 when she went to work for Dr. Francis DDS in Clinton. She retired in 2007 after the dentristry was taken over by Dr. J. Menard DDS.

Kent and Carole have sustained many life hurdles and maintained a strong and lobingh marriage.

They now enjoy retirement, having had 2 children, Wendy Woodward, and Jeff Cole. Two in'laws; Kathy Cole and Dan Woodward. They have 5 grandsons: Patrick, Seth, and Sean Woodward, and Adam and Ryan Cole. They have many nieces and nephews and even a couple of great-nieces and nephews.

Congratulations to Kent And Carole for setting a strong loving example in this day and age of troubled marriages. I am proud to call you my parents and eager to tell your story to any who will listen."

From Patty Louise: "This was in the Times 100 years ago. Only a few of your Story Swap students will remember Waterville 170 years ago."

Waterville Seventy Years Ago.

In an old gazetteer of the state of New York, published seventy years ago, a pretty accurate description of every place in the state, on the map at that time, is given and among these we find Waterville. As there are not many now living here who remember Waterville at that stage of its existence we reprint the following: "Waterville, village and post office, Sangerfield, Oneida county, is situated on a branch of the Oriskany Creek. It contains about 120 dwelling houses, 1,000 inhabitants, one Presbyterian and one Baptist Church, one banking house, two taverns and ten stores. Here are located one large woolen factory, one starch factory, three grist mills, two saw mills, three distilleries, two furnaces and an extensive machine shop, where are manufactured large quantities of elliptic steel springs used for carriages and other purposes, and an extensive organ manufactory. The Waterville Academy Is a select school in a flourishing condition. In addition to which there is a popular female seminary. This village Is beautifully located and does an ( ??c.lcnsivo) business, being surrounded by a densely settled and rich agricultural population."

(This will give the "Old timers" even MORE to talk about on Friday!)

Thanks, Patty!

HERE AND THERE

"Street Closed" barriers are up at both ends of Berrill Avenue....

.... while the Waterville DPW carves back the edges of the roadway in preparation for paving.

Yesterday was chilly and wet, but Farmers Market was busy!
Although temperatures hovered around the 60-degree mark, there were very few parking spots to be had along Park Place and Madison Street next to the Park.

It wasn't the BEST day for the "Smoothie" makers, but they had still had five customers for the fruit-filled blend and their special "energy drink," which includes a not-so-secret ingredient: ginseng!

Sue Getman, wearing a Winter jacket, was subbing at her daughter Jill's booth where there was basket filled with Jill's special "Brookies" -- brownies with cookies inside! -- and a display of beautifully-made cutting boards by Zach Abbe.

I had not realized it, but after chatting with various folks for ten minutes or so, the dampness had invaded my camera. My apologies to Sue and the Blundts of Longview Farm and their granddaughter, Monica, but even the misty blurriness can't hide their smiles!

I bought some of their Sweet Corn from Georgia and it was just as they promised:

Super-sweet and tender! Wish I'd bought more!

The next several pictures that I took were equally fuzzy, but ........

......... another ten minutes in a warm car and the lens had cleared by the time I got to Sangerfield and saw the Zwahlen's garden.

IN THE NEWS

From the Observer-Dispatch, June 25:
"Outdoors: Chittning Pond access will be closed for next six weeks"

(Excerpt) "The fishing access site at Chittning Pond, on Route 20 in Sangerfield, is undergoing an upgrade and will be closed for about the next six weeks.

Priore Construction Company of Utica is doing the work on the $62,000 project, which will include regarding the parking area, adding two handicapped accessible parking spaces, five additional spaces for cars without trailers while maintaining room for vehicles with trailers and room for a small bus to turn around. A 28-foot long walking path to an 11 by 38 foot fishing platform, and the boat launch will be improved as will the road in from Route 20.

The pond, which will remain open – anglers will need to find legal and safe alternate parking – is a popular spot for those hoping to catch largemouth bass, bullhead, sunfish, crappie, pickerel, and perch. Questions about the project can be directed to the Department of Conservation’s Herkimer Operations unit at 866-6330."

I was told, yesterday, that Wednesday Evening Concerts in the Park will begin next week.
As soon as I have a list of performers, I'll post it for you.
