Good Monday Morning!

It's 23 degrees and overcast.

GARBAGE DAY

****************************

VILLAGE BOARD MEETING at 7:00

*****

Yesterday, when I was riding around looking for a place to take pictures of the fire in Deansboro, I passed this wonderfully bright green lawn on Lumbard Road!

The brief "January thaw" that gave me that view, also resulted in these conditions on the Marshall Trail.

Snowmobilers and Cross-country skiiers might think of heading North!

The Weather Forecast From WKTV: "*Lake effect snow warning has been issued for Lewis County from Sunday afternoon until Monday night.*

*Lake effect snow advisory has been issued for Northern Oneida County from Sunday night until Monday night.*

Lake effect snow has begun to develop across the Tug Hill and North Country. The lake effect band may shift down to Northern Oneida County Monday morning before moving back north during the afternoon. In addition, some snow showers off of Lake Erie are reaching all the way into Central NY this evening. Once the wind shifts, the snow showers will wind down, with the exception of the North Country. Outside of the lake effect snow, the weather will remain quiet with partly sunny skies and seasonable temperatures.

Another chance for light snow showers arrives on Tuesday with the potential for yet another coastal storm by the end of the work week."

I did a little digging of my own - online! -
and found that:

although Oneida County does not seem to have a "study" available, there is a list of 71 wells that have been dug in the past 20 years or so. Only seven have been attempted in Sangerfield Township and, of those, just a couple seem to be operating.

This, however, is interesting!

6:53 - Fire destroys Marshall Highway Garage ---------

I talked with Marshall Township Historian Dorothy McConnell, a little while ago, and she said that she did not recall any disaster in Deansboro that would equal the effects of this fire.

From WKTV: "Fire Engulfs Town of Marshall Highway Garage."

"Fire Erupts inside Deansboro Barn" - The Observer-Dispatch

_______

I don't ever try to get closer than anyone else, and - in this case - followed the Fire Police's instructions to turn off of 315 onto California Road.

There were quite a few vehicles pulled over on the sides of the road and clusters of onlookers stood and stared at the dense cloud of blackish smoke.

It appeared that an aerial ladder was being used to flood the fire from above.

There must have been over a dozen tankers taking turns filling up at the bridges on 315 and California Road. Spectator traffic on California was heavier than it should have been and I got out of the way as fast as I could!

View from Lumbard at the top of California Road.

2011 is Here!

It's 41 degrees at 9 o'clock.

(Yes! I slept late!)

The WKTV weather forecast: After a high temperature of 48 degrees for New Years Eve the weather will continue to stay mild for the first day of 2011. For those of you heading out and about locally this evening, watch out for patchy fog and a few scattered rain showers. Temperatures will stay above freezing tonight, so any melting snow this afternoon should not refreeze on the roadways.

A quiet and dry start to 2011 but a cold front will bring some light rain showers Saturday night. These rain showers may briefly turn over to snow showers late Saturday night.

A generally quiet stretch of weather takes place Sunday through Wednesday. Lake effect snow showers look to set up across the Tug Hill Sunday night into Monday. Another chance for lake effect snow showers later in the week. Temperatures return to seasonably chilly levels for the first week of 2011."

IN THE NEWS

Yesterday was a day to be outdoors! There were bikes everywhere .........

........... and runners were stripped down to shorts and T-shirts and still dripping with sweat!

Looking very overdressed for the weather, these snowmobilers were taking a break at Nice 'n Easy in Sangerfield.

If all the trails were like the Marshall Trail, they may have been pondering a trip to the North Country!

************************

That's a tradition that we look forward to!

******************

Traditions of 40 or more years ago:

New Year's Day parties - gala events - at the George Reilly home ("Parkwood") on Sanger Hill Road and at Dr. Battles' house on Stafford Avenue where drinks were served in Mrs. Battles' collection of antique shaving mugs that had originally been owned by the customers of ?????'s barber shop in the Candee Block (I think!)

Perhaps someone can remember more?
