It's garbage day.

32 degrees and foggy in the Hollow at 6:00 A.M.

**********************

WKTV's weather forecast: "Sunshine is expected tomorrow (Thursday) with the storm track well to the south. With the sun, temperatures will rebound to near or just above 50.

A steady, gradual warmup is expected as we head into the end of the week and the weekend. Temperatures should climb well into the 50's Friday with partly sunny skies.

A warm front brings the threat for rain showers by Saturday Night, followed by a spike in temperatures on Sunday. We could be flirting with temperatures well into the 60s by Sunday and Monday!

IN the MAIL

An interesting note from Louie Langone: "So far this year, at the wastewater plant, I measured 173"* of snow, compared to last year's total of 119".

* That's almost 14½ feet!

Thanks, Lou! That's enough snow, isn't it? It can stop, now!

**************

To stir your memory, Lou also sent along these photographs of the fire that destroyed the Sangerfield Inn on April 10, 1992.

Yes - I remember that. Do you?

Thanks, Lou.

YESTERDAY

The afternoon was gray and drizzly, but these kids didn't notice the rain!

The DPW's street sweeper was out and about .............

...... and, for those with smaller clean-up jobs, Tom Morgan had a bright collection of rakes, brooms and spades in the sidewalk showroom.

Aha! There are Mets fans on E. Bacon Street.

(The Sox have now lost five in a row and the Yankees game was rained out.)

Recyclables Day

It's 31.5 degrees and overcast at 5:50 a.m.

The weather forecast from WKTV: " As a weak area of low pressure approaches from the west (on Wednesday) we expect more cloud cover and a few rain or snow showers. Most areas won't see any snow accumulation but a very thin coating can't be ruled out over the higher terrain. Drier on Thursday and Friday and warmer, with high temperatures in the lower 50s. Warmer still for the weekend, with temperatures climbing well into the 50s on Saturday and especially Sunday."

YESTERDAY

What began as rain had, by mid-morning, become thicker and whiter
and
snow coated hilltops to the East and West.

We took some consolation in the news that it had snowed as much as five or six inches in Cazenovia!

The new precipitation, however, filled creeks once again.

Oooops! Sorry!
(I really meant "Glen" but seem to have typed "Dan," earlier! Not enough coffee!)

He's in his new office on West Main Street behind the door with the "Acrelec" logo!

ROTARY CLUB VILLAGE CLEAN-UP

(from Debbie Conway:)

"Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Village Hall.
Vests and bags provided, we suggest folks bring gloves if they have them.
Volunteers will go out in pairs or small groups to work a section of the
Village. Usually we are out about 2-3 hours at most but in that short

Announcing the publication of a

New Book on Oriskany and Big Creeks

Using David H. Beetle's "Along the Oriskany," published in 1947, as a jumping-off point, "Clinton and Kirkland historian Richard Williams has completed a book on the Oriskany and Big Creek valley which will be released in mid-April 2011. The 148-page book has 65 pictures and descriptions of the 10 hamlets and villages along the creek plus sections on the geology, the history, the trees and plants, the animals, the fishing, and the economy of the valley.

Chapter one, by Jim Cunningham, details the Madison County lakes at the summit of the Chenango Canal in Bouckville and how they still today supply water through the Oriskany to the Erie Canal.

About one-half of the pictures have been taken by Clinton photographer Marc Goldberg, and retired Hamilton College geology professor Don Potter has explained the rocks and minerals and the effect of the glaciers on the area. Also O-D sports columnist John Pitarresi has written about fishing in the creek.

The books will sell for $24.00 state tax included and all proceeds will benefit the Clinton Historical Society where Williams has served as president and Newsletter Editor. "

It's BIG TRASH DAY

40 degrees and very wet.

(Click to update)

From WKTV: "A flood warning is in effect for the Mohawk River. Minor flooding is expected.

Rain showers linger as a cold front crosses the area this morning. As colder air arrives today, the tail end of the precipitation will switch to snow over the higher elevations later this morning. No accumulation is expected. Breezy and chilly this afternoon with temperatures near 40.

Partly cloudy tonight with temperatures falling below freezing. A mix of sunshine and clouds for Wednesday with a rain or snow shower possible. Drier on Thursday and Friday and warmer, with high temperatures in the lower 50s.

Warmer still for the weekend, with temperatures climbing well into the 50s on Saturday and especially Sunday." (Yay!)

FINALLY!

I started to see TV commercials promoting Robert Redford's new film, "The Conspirator," which opens on April 15th and is sure to be a winner!

Watch the trailer, and then click on "Cast & Crew" where, in the list of producers, you'll find a familiar name: Brain Falk!

There seems to be a paucity (or dearth) of news around the village. (Check The Waterville Times, later today: there's sure to be news, there!) There are varying rumors about the land just to the South of "Michael's," in Sangerfield, being put to use as a site for some sort of retail business / businesses - but they are just rumors of the sort that serve to occupy us while we wait for real Springtime to arrive.

*******************

A few days ago, Steve Keating told me about a NYSEG training project South of Hamilton: the Wintertime erection of a new osprey nesting platform in a large marshy area.

I went looking for it on Sunday and found it quite easily ---- a 60' tall pole with a flat platform at the top is hard to miss --- but couldn't see any sign of osprey construction.

While a lot f us spend our spare time doing not-much-of-anything,
two men that I know don't waste a minute!

Every chance that he gets, Jody Hildreth continues his explorations. Using topo maps, histories and hearsay, he's discovered two or three "new" waterfalls and made at least three return trips to Blair's Brook and "Frostbite Falls" on the side of Tassel Hill.

"Kelly Falls" with "Scarlet Cup" fungus.

On one of his earlier treks, he discovered this beautiful little waterfall just above "Frostbite" and named it "Kelly Falls," for his beautiful wife.

Yesterday, with snow and ice melted and a heavy morning rain, "Frostbite" was roaring!

At another waterfall.......

this one, near the Skaneateles Turnpike.

........... and this may be a small, seasonal fall on Cole Hill.

He has more waterfalls on his list, and we can look forward to more photographs!!

(Thanks, Jody!)

One of the most popular blogs, locally, is that being maintained by Alex Meszler, an S.U. sophomore who is spending this semester at the Strasburg Conservatory in France studying organ performance. (Yes - he's become very conversant in the language.)

Nearly every weekend, he boards a train or a bus - or, even, a bicycle - and visits historic places that many of us have only read about or seen on television.

Two weeks ago, he went to Normandy to see "the beaches."

This view is of the beach from the American Cemetery.
